Proposed ferry Dili - Suai
Following the family involvement in matters nautical outlined in the previous page, in late 1999 Anthony Tony Haritos saw an opportunity to start a coastal shipping project in East Timor following the referendum and ensuing chaos.
He along with Marshall and Nicholas Haritos negotiated contracts with various NGOs, then won a contract with Eurest, the company supplying the Peace keeping Forces, which ran for five years. They supplied Suai and Oecussi every week for five years.
In 2003 Haritos started a Dili-Darwin run however closed that down a year later following an agreement with a competitor over freight rate subsidies. Haritos began importing bulk fuels to Dili, 250,000 litres every voyage.
Tony took the first LCT (landing craft) into Aceh just three weeks after the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, sub-contracting to the UN's WFP, as well as IFRC (Red Cross) and others. Soon Haritos had four LCT's operating in Aceh.
In June 2013 Haritos Shipping landed the final shipment of large transformers for the massive power station at Betano on the south side of Timor Leste .
